A good detox diet isn’t a fad diet. Even though you might lose a little weight during a detox, the real goal is to improve your overall health and help you to heal more quickly from health problems by giving your digestive system, liver and kidneys a well deserved rest. These are the organs which do the heavy work of detoxifying our bodies.

A good detox diet plan will help to reset and strengthen your metabolism, which will go a long ways towards stopping the cravings for sugar, salt, carbs, caffeine, and alcohol.

A detox diet plan can reduce symptoms from diabetes, aches and pains, foggy and forgetful mind, headaches, digestive issues, allergies… the list goes on.

Following a good one day, three day, or seven to ten day detoxification diet can do wonders for your health, body, mind and soul!

What to Stay Away From on a Detox Diet Plan

When you’re on a detox diet plan, you’ll want to eliminate dairy products, although a small amount of unsweetened yogurt with live, active acidophilus cultures is okay.

Stay away from any sugars, coffee, alcohol, tobacco products, wheat, gluten. It is a good idea to gradually wean yourself off of caffeine and sugar drinks beforehand, so you don’t get headaches. No drinks with sugar added. Nothing made with flour, starches, caffeine, hydrogenated oils, or vegetable oil.

Do not eat processed foods! Pretty much anything that comes in a box, can or package is processed. If there is a long list of unidentifiable ingredients, stay away!

There are, of course, exceptions. From a can, good quality sardines or tuna or salmon, as long as they are in just water or olive oil and maybe a little salt, are usually good to eat. Some good organic, frozen vegetables and fruits are usually ‘flash-frozen’, when picked, so they still contain most of their nutrients.

It is a good idea to hide or throw away any foods that might tempt you!

A detox diet plan might sound a bit rough, but you’ll replace these with healthier options, and you will love the changes in your mind and body!

What You Should Eat And Do on a Detox Diet

Start each day on your diet with a cup of hot water with the juice of at least one half of a lemon added. It’s a caffeine free energy booster which also gets your digestive system going and helps your body to clean out overnight toxins. Have this drink before breakfast every morning. A lot of people in Asian countries do this, and they have much less obesity, heart and cholesterol problems than we do here in the United States.

Your diet should consist of:

  • Plenty of fresh, or frozen if necessary, fruits and vegetables.
  • Lots and lots of greens. The more the better!
  • Wild rice, quinoa (‘keen-wa’, Love It!), steel cut oats and millet are good whole grains to eat.
  • Lots of beans and legumes.
  • Fresh wild fish.
  • Organic eggs are okay, as are
  • raw, unsalted nuts and seeds.
  • For oils, stick with unprocessed coconut, flax or hemp oil and cold-pressed extra virgin olive oil.
  • Beverages are simple – plenty of water is critical. Try to drink up to one gallon of clean water per day.
  • Green or white tea can also count, as can decaffeinated black tea.

As much as possible, eat raw foods while on your detox diet. Raw foods contain more of the detoxifying nutrients and enzymes that you want, as well as a lot of fiber. Many fruits and vegetables are actually far tastier when they haven’t been cooked! It’s okay to have some cooked meals while on this diet, but do your best to eat as much raw food as possible.

Get 7-8 hours of sleep a night. Take 10-15 minutes each day to do some deep breathing in a quiet place. This will work wonders for calming your brain and body.
